Description

Lt. Gen. Eisenhower writes home to his wife: "I'm still struggling—and always think of you"

World War II-dated ALS, one page, 8 x 10.5, December 27 [circa 1942-43]. Handwritten letter to his wife, Mamie D. Eisenhower, in part: "An officer starts back to the U.S. in a few minutes. I had thought I'd have time for a long letter—but no—everything is normal; no time for anything. However, even with this poor excuse, you'll know that I'm still struggling—and always think of you. Last night I received a lovely robe from London, which, it seems, you had Bob Littlejohn send to me. It's [the] nicest thing you ever saw. Perfectly beautiful, light & warm, which is most necessary. Thank you so much & it's a bit grand for a theater of operations, but I'll use it all the time, just the same. I had a long letter from 'Min' in the past week; also one from you. Another from John (written at W. P. on the day of the Navy game) so it was a good work in that respect. {Eisenhower switches pens here] One of your letters showed your concern because of failure to hear from me. I try to write every few days." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original Allied Force Headquarters envelope, which Eisenhower has marked "Free" in the upper right; the upper left is marked "Lt. General D. D. Eisenhower," which indicates that this letter was ostensibly written between July 7, 1942—when he was promoted to Lt. General—and February 11, 1943, the date Ike was appointed as General of the Army of the United States.
