Handwritten letter to his white botany student Ford Davis, who became his close friend, and to whom he refers to here as "My beloved boy Mr. Davis," in full: "Your letter reached me in Washington D.C. I was thrilled to hear from my precious boy Ford:— I congratulate you upon your demonstration, you are doing it just right. I hope you will do just as much of this as possible. Your closing evidently was a great success. Wish I could have heard it. I am very, very tired dear, but hope to reach home at least by Jan. 1st. My how I wish I had you with me. The prospect looks better and better all the time for our getting together, will tell you about it when I see you. I have never spoken to such large and enthusiastic audience. I just want my dear boy Ford to know that he is one of the greatest comforts of my life. Must go they are coming for me. May the great Creator continue to bless you. With so much love, good wishes and admiration. I am so sincerely yours, with the hope that you will have a wonderful Christmas." With a brief postscript: "Please excuse pencil." In fine condition.
