British soldier (1743-1823) who later served as a Scottish Member of parliament in the British Parliament. One of Cornwallis' most trusted officers during the American Revolution, Balfour fought and was severely injured in the Battle of Bunker Hill (Breed's Hill) and also participated in battles in Elizabethtown, Brandywine, and Germantown. Manuscript DS, signed “N. Balfour, M. Gen'l,” one page, 9 x 7.25, November 1794. A receipt amounting to a total of 9 pounds and 17 shillings for a "Return of Spirits Purchased for the 42nd or Royal Highland Regiment of foot by order of Major General Balfour." Signed and approved at the bottom by Balfour, and countersigned by Major William Dickson. Affixed to a slightly larger sheet. In very good to fine condition, with show-through from mounting remnants on the back.
