Mayor Duane approves injury compensation "in consequence of the Alteration of Greenwich Street"

American Revolutionary leader from New York (1733-1797) who was a signatory of the Continental Association and the Articles of Confederation. Among his many posts, Duane served as a delegate to the Second Continental Congress and the Congress of the Confederation, as a New York state senator, the 44th Mayor of New York City, and the 1st post-colonial Mayor of New York City. Manuscript DS, signed “Ja. Duane, Mayor,” one page, 8 x 6.5, November 19, 1788. New York Mayor James Duane, "pursuant to an Order of the Common Council," directs the city's treasurer, Daniel Phoenix, to "pay out of the Revenue Fund to Mrs. Mary Shaw the sum of forty right Pounds six Shillings with Interest at the rate of five per cent per annum…in full as Compensation for the Injury sustained by her Lot of Ground in consequence of the Alteration of Greenwich Street." Signed at the conclusion by Duane. In fine condition, with scattered light toning.
