Description

TLS as president signed “RN,” one page, 6.75 x 8.75, White House letterhead, February 26, 1971. Letter to Rex Scouten, in full: "While I am sure that every White House social function presents new challenges, the television coverage of the State Dinner in honor of Prime Minister Colombo must certainly have made major demands on your patience and ingenuity as well as your time. The splendid manner in which the whole operation was carried out is a strong testimonial to your ability, and I wanted both to thank you and to congratulate you on an outstanding job." In fine condition.

Scouten’s association with the Nixon family began in 1953 when, as a Secret Service agent he was assigned to protect Vice President Richard Nixon, traveling with him to 42 countries over the next four years. From 1957-69 he was Asst. Chief Usher at the White House. He coordinated the funeral arrangements for JFK. When Nixon became President he appointed Scouten Chief Usher, a position he held continuously until 1986. He oversaw the state dinner on the White House lawn for 1,400 in honor of returning Vietnam POWs. When Nixon resigned in 1974, he packed the Nixon family bags. After he retired in early 1986 Nancy Reagan coaxed him to come out of retirement to serve as White House Curator, a position he held until 1997.
