ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 8 x 9.5, April 22, 1835. Literary letter to German-American jurist and political philosopher Francis Lieber, regarding his suggestion that a work be abridged. In part: "I am flattered…I would observe, however, that the work is already so small in size and simple in matter as to be fitted for circulation among the majority of juvenile readers, and an abridgment, selecting its most striking features, could not but interfere with its circulation among that class." Addressed on the integral leaf in Irving's hand. In fine condition. Accompanied by an engraved portrait bearing a facsimile signature.
