American author (1836-1902) best known for his colorful tales of California pioneers, including the much-anthologized story 'The Outcasts of Poker Flat.' ALS, one page, 4.5 x 7, September 24, [1873]. Letter to a S. S. Conant, editor of Harper's Weekly. In full: "I am glad to be able to accept your invitation to meet Mr. Wilkie Collins at dinner at the Century Club on the 1st prox." In very good to fine condition, with trimmed edges, and a stain to the upper right corner. Collins was a popular English novelist and playwright, regarded as the first British detective story writer. On October 1, 1873, a dinner at the Century Club was hosted in his honor, with distinguished guests including Bret Harte, cartoonist Thomas Nast, politician John Hay, critic Richard Henry Stoddard, and others.
