TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, Harvard Law School letterhead, August 3, 1979. Letter to Buddy Goldberg, in part: "I believe that it was a mistake for President Ford to have pardoned former President Nixon. Our legal system is based upon the ideal of equal justice under law. The rich and poor, the powerful and humble, the educated and uneducated should all be required to answer equally serious charges of criminal misconduct. Unhappily, we do not always achieve that ideal in practice, but we should do our best to pursue it. The pardon of former President Nixon carried the lesson that if you become powerful enough you may not have to answer to serious charges of criminal abuse of official power. If President Nixon had been indicted and convicted, there would have been more room for individualized treatment in shaping any sentence for the crime of which he was convicted." In fine condition.
