Description

Patton writes home from Mounted Service School

ALS signed “George S. Patton, Jr.,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.5 x 7, Mounted Service School, Fort Riley, Kansas letterhead, no date but likely circa 1913. Letter to his "Mama," in part: "Sundies here are like Sheridan or a grave yard I never saw anything so quiet it is fierce and hard to get used to I fear I will get fat I have in fact gained already. We have a brown house like the one at Sheridan…the bath tub is so small that you have to wash half at a time. I have been painting it a little at a time. The house not the tub, and it looks better now. I started my instruction Thursday and gave two lessons with fair success so I hope it will be all right. So far I have been able to take the riding course with the class of course it does not amount to much yet just riding at a walk and trot and getting settled in the saddle…If there is not room for you all at the house there is a hotel in Junction City…it is perfectly dead just now and will be until the 13th Cav. comes back. There is a regiment of artillery here but they are of no use socially." In fine condition. Accompanied by a modern glossy photo of Gen. Patton.

Patton arrived at Fort Riley's Mounted Service School in September 1913 as both a student and instructor: he taught fencing to other cavalry officers, many of whom were senior to him in rank, and was designated 'Master of the Sword,' a title denoting the school's top instructor in swordsmanship. Patton graduated from the Mounted Service School in June 1915.
