Absolutely extraordinary collection of five original vintage glossy 10 x 13 doubleweight promo photos of the key Wizard of Oz figures in character—Judy Garland as Dorothy, Frank Morgan as the Wizard, Bert Lahr as the Cowardly Lion, Ray Bolger as the Scarecrow, and Jack Haley as the Tin Man—individually signed in fountain pen by the subjects, with all but Garland adding an inscription to Barron Polan, assistant to Wizard of Oz producer Mervyn LeRoy. Each photograph has a "1939 Loew's Inc." copyright notice to the lower left corner, and a typed caption on the reverse. In overall fine condition.
The inscriptions read: "Sincerely, Judy Garland"; "To Barron, with very best wishes, Frank Morgan, 'The Wizard'"; "To 'Barron,' With kindest regards, Bert Lahr"; "To Barron, Best wishes, Ray Bolger"; and "To Barron—With sincere best wishes—Jack Haley." Autographs on these iconic poses are exceedingly rare to begin with—we have only ever seen one authentic Garland-signed Dorothy portrait (as an 8 x 10), and maybe three Wizards (all 8 x 10s). They are unheard of in this size, and their direct association with the Wizard of Oz producer's assistant makes them that much more remarkable. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!
