Confederate major general (1826-1895) who distinguished himself during the Siege of Petersburg. Two handwritten letters from William Mahone, both signed "Mahone," each one page, 7.75 x 9.75 and 8.5 x 11, both written from Petersburg, Virginia. The first ALS, October 23, 1884, United States Senate letterhead, addressed to Hugh Douglas Wise, the son of Virginia Congressman John Sergeant Wise, in part: "Say to yr dear Ma, that it was very kind and thoughtful of her to suggest that you send me yr Pa's cheerful note." The second ALS, May 21, 1888, addressed to John Sergeant Wise, in full: "Yours of this day, covering the certain papers therein named is received." In overall fine condition.
