Description

Early American planter, cartographer, and politician (1708-1757) who was the father of US President Thomas Jefferson; his 'Fry-Jefferson' map, created in 1751 with Joshua Fry, accurately depicted the Allegheny Mountains and showed the route of the 'Great Wagon Road.' Manuscript DS, signed “Pet. Jefferson,” one page, 7.5 x 12.25, October 10, 1736. Legal document issued in Goochland County, Virginia, in which Peter Jefferson (father of Thomas Jefferson), Isham Randolph (grandfather of Thomas Jefferson), and Henry Wood "are holden and firmly bound unto John Fleming…in the Sum of thirty two thousand nine hundred and fifty six Pounds of Tobacco to the Payment whereof well and truly to be made to the said John Fleming." Signed at the conclusion by Jefferson, Randolph, and Wood, as well as John Fleming and Daniel Stones. In very good to fine condition, with scattered light staining, and splitting to the central horizontal fold reinforced with archival tape on the reverse.
