American statesman (1814-1886) who served as Governor of New York and who was the unsuccessful Democratic presidential candidate in the infamous disputed election of 1876. ALS signed “S. J. Tilden,” one page, 4.5 x 7, March 8, 1851. Letter providing the address for John Rand, in part: "It will give me pleasure to call at your house and accompany you to his studio, if you can mention some morning when it will be convenient to you." In fine condition.
