Description

American statesman (1782-1866) who served variously as governor of Michigan, senator, ambassador to France, secretary of war, and secretary of state. LS as Secretary of State, signed “Lew. Cass,” one page, 8 x 10, September 15, 1859. Letter to Pelatiah W. Perit, president of the Chamber of Commerce of New York. In part: "Your communication of the 10th instant, addressed to the President of the United States, in relation to the lights needed on the Bahama Bank has been referred to this Department. In reply, I have to inform you that a copy of it has been sent to the Minister of the United States at London, with instructions to invite the attention of the British Government to the subject." In fine condition, with two small filing holes to the upper blank area.
