Description

American lawyer and politician (1786-1857) who served as Andrew Jackson's Secretary of State and figured prominently in the 'Bank War.' ALS signed “L. McLane,” one page, 8 x 10, February 19, 1823. Letter to Thomas Wilson, Cashier of the Bank of the United States at Philadelphia, disputing a bank statement. In part: "I apprehend there must be some error, in my account with the Bk. U. S., as stated in the Book, I have this day received. It does not appear, that I am credited with any deposits in 1822, but 20$, by Mr. Dupont, whereas I am very certain I deposited a large sum in the last fall, upon which I have been drawing. I must trouble you to reexamine this account, and make me acquainted with the result." Addressed in the integral lead in McLane's hand, and franked "Free, L. McLane" in the upper right.
