British philosopher and civil servant (1806-1873) who was an influential contributor to social theory, political theory, and political economy. ALS signed “J. S. Mill,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.25 x 7.5, June 27, 1847. Letter to Mr. Masson, in part: "I have been shamefully long in acknowledging receipt of the pamphlet you sent me. Pray thank Dr. Russell from me for it & for the very handsome mention of my book…It makes me think better of Homeopathy than I ever did before to find that such a person has embraced it. To say the truth however, he has made me think more highly of Dr. Faber than I knew there was any ground for, since it appears Dr. F. is quite aware of the exceedingly imperfect state of his art—a conclusion which I had long since come to, & partly on the very ground which he seems to take, viz that the most opposite modes of treatment seem to be about equally successful or equally inefficacious in their practical results. Homeopathy no doubt has often been successful, or seemed so, but so has every new theory of medicine that has ever had partisans. I am not, however, at all prejudiced against Homeopathy. I know some of the facts which it is supported by & am very ready to back more of them." In fine condition, with light toning, and a short split, along the hinge.
