English theologian and poet (1801-1890) who was first the Anglican leader of the Oxford Movement, then became a Roman Catholic priest and cardinal; he wrote the well known hymn 'Lead, Kindly Light,' and was canonized as a Catholic saint in 2019. ALS signed "John H. Card. Newman," one page, 4 x 5, September 28, 1881. Letter to Mrs. Combs, in part: "I am very much concerned to hear of your serious illness. It was too kind of you to make such an effort to write, & I do trust that you did not suffer from it. I fancied you knew about the Lenthalls. I had much esteem and kind feeling for Elizabeth,, The last time I was inside St. Mary's, was at her funeral. Her sister had the misfortune of a bad husband, who drove her out of her senses; but she recovered them, and for ten years before her death passed her time in peace." In fine condition.
