Boston-born Baptist minister and academic (1808-1895) best known as the lyricist of ‘America’ (‘My Country, ’Tis of Thee’), written while he was a student at Andover Theological Seminary. ALS signed "S. F. Smith," one page, 4.25 x 4, December 27, 1871. Letter replying to a request for a contribution, in part: "I beg leave to say that I will endeavor to send you something in season for the North St. Fair paper, which, if I remember rightly, you are to issue in Feb. next." In very good to fine condition, with trimmed edges and some discoloration to corners from scrapbook residue on the reverse.
