Chaplain (1808-1868) of the United States House of Representatives, who gave the opening prayer at the consecration of the National Cemetery at Gettysburg on November 19, 1863, the ceremony during which Abraham Lincoln later gave the Gettysburg Address. ALS signed "T. H. Stockton," one page, 7.75 x 8.75, December 9, 1841. Handwritten letter to Rev. Luther Cox in Baltimore, in full: "Am exceedingly pleased with the hope of your presence. Meeting began last night. But not necessary, if inconvenient, for you to come till Saturday. Will be continued, I expect, all next week." In fine condition, with a few light stains and some seal-related loss to lower right edge.
