Career US Army officer (1828-1864) who served as a general in the Union Army and was killed in action at the Battle of Atlanta—the second highest ranking Union officer killed during the war. Sought-after ink signature, “Very respectfully, Your obt. Servt. Jas. B. McPherson, Maj. Gen'l,” on an off-white 3.5 x 1.75 sheet, which is affixed to an off-white 4.75 x 7.25 album page that features six other notable autographs to the front and back, including: President Woodrow Wilson (on an affixed White House card), his Vice President Thomas R. Marshall, and first Secretary of State William J. Bryan (all three on back); and Union Generals Andrew Hickenlooper and William E. Strong, and Lieutenant Colonel Lewis Mulford Dayton (all three on front). The album pages features various collector's notations. In very good to fine condition, with staining to McPherson (showing through to Bryan), and toning to half of the Wilson card.
