Important complimentary pass for the "International Banquet in honor of The Atlantic Cable," held at St. James Hall, Buffalo, on September 1, 1858, 4.75 x 3.75, signed on the reverse in ink, "Millard Fillmore, Prest.” In very good condition, with light soiling, creasing, and some short edge tears. The 'Great Cable Jubilee' was celebrated throughout the United States, the Canadas, and Great Britain, recognizing the successful completion of the first transatlantic telegraph cable. The first communications occurred on August 16, 1858, reducing the time of communication from North America to Europe from ten days—the time it took to deliver a message by ship—to a matter of minutes. Unfortunately, the cable functioned for only three weeks, but it proved the value and viability of the concept.
