Twice-signed ALS, “Paul, xxx" and "Paul McCartney,” one page, 6.5 x 8, August 25, 1963. Letter to admirer Ann Bennett, in full: "Thanks for your letter. Sorry this one won't be as long as yours but we've got to go on stage soon. Anyway—thanks again." In fine condition. Includes the original mailing envelope, the reverse of which McCartney has drawn an abridged version of the original Beatles logo, complete with two antennas popping out at the top of the “B." This original logo was designed by McCartney and used by the Beatles in the early formative months of 1963. By the time McCartney had penned this letter, Ringo Starr had recently taken ownership of his Ludwig drum kit, complete with the new 'drop T' Beatles logo. Regardless, Paul has elected to draw his original design here; he would only do this on a select basis for a brief period in 1963.
Accompanied by a letter from the original recipient, which reads: “In August 1963 the Beatles were playing in Bournemouth for several days. I was 16 and a big Paul McCartney fan. I wrote a 20ft letter about myself and how I liked their music etc. I enclosed a s.a.e. Hoping for a reply. This letter was the result.” Also accompanied by printed copies of an article about the letter that was published in the Sunday Times magazine on February 27, 1983, and by a certificate of authenticity from Tracks.
McCartney most likely wrote this letter on August 24, 1963, shortly before the Beatles went on stage to perform their final night of the group’s residency at the Gaumont Cinema in Bournemouth, U.K, and then mailed it the following day. During their brief stay in Bournemouth, the Beatles participated in a historic photo shoot in a corridor of their hotel. Photographer Robert Freeman captured the group in a series of iconic black-and-white portraits that would be used for their upcoming album, ‘With the Beatles,’ and eventually for the band’s U.S. debut album, ‘Meet the Beatles.’ Handwritten material by any member of the Beatles, particularly during their time together, is quite rare and desirable.
