First Lady (1846-1918) during the first two years of her brother Grover Cleveland's presidency, replaced upon his marriage to Frances Clara Folsom. Uncommon ALS as acting first lady, signed “Rose Elizabeth Cleveland,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 3.75 x 6, Executive Mansion letterhead, March 30, 1886. Letter to "Mr. Phelps," in part: "It gives me much pleasure to present to you, our good country-woman, Mrs. Marshall O. Roberts, who, however, I am sure is no stranger to you—at least by name and repute. She has been a feature of our past Washington season, and I trust her coming one in London will be as pleasant to her, and those who meet her." In fine condition.
