ALS signed “Jno. Pope,” ten pages, 5 x 8, Headquarters Department of the Missouri letterhead, January 17, 1883. Lengthy letter to General Manning Ferguson Force, penned in his difficult-to-read hand, in part: "I have just finished reading your long letter & I am greatly obliged to you for writing it. I don't understand business or business methods…It does not seem that there can be…an approximation to my knowledge of the conditions of Mr. Horton's property until his debts…are [entirely] known. Whether an accurate statement can be made I don't know but until it is made we shall be acting altogether in the dark. Neither can I understand why he is so opposed to…so advantageous a lease…If I had known the true state of things seven or eight years ago, I should have been better prepared to meet it, but two years ago I asked Mr. Horton specifically concerning a life insurance policy I thought of taking out & he told me in express terms that it was not necessary to spend money in that way as there would be enough from his estate for us all." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original hand-addressed mailing envelope.
