Description

ALS signed “W. T. Sherman, General,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, Headquarters Army of the United States letterhead, May 1, 1873. Letter to General Manning Ferguson Force, regarding the attainment of hard-to-find books, in part: "I have your letter of April 28. Although the publication you refer to would seem to belong to the Army, the printing & publication is made under Congressional action…and no copies are supplied me for distribution. I did receive one…of the Medical & Surgical History and lent it to a Dr. Mayo of Oxford England who had been a surgeon in our Volunteer Army and was extremely polite to me when I visited Oxford last summer. Therefore I am without a copy…As to the Reports of the Exploration of the 40th Parallel, I have not found…a single copy. I regret this extremely, and must refer you to some member of Congress, who use their allotted copies for distribution to constituents." In fine condition.

Manning Ferguson Force was a lawyer, judge, and soldier from Ohio (1824-1899) who became known as the commander of the 20th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was promoted to major general of volunteers in March 1865 and, following the Battle of Atlanta, he participated in Sherman's March to the Sea. Force was a recipient of the Army Medal of Honor for gallantry in action.
