Early LS as a New York congressman, one page, 7.75 x 9.75, May 28, 1839. Written from Buffalo, a letter to Henry A. Wise, in full: "It would be gratifying to us, should you accede to the proposition embodied in the accompanying letter from the Chairman of the Lecture Committee of The Young Men's Association of this City. We are aware that the delivery of lectures is not your accustomed occupation, still we trust that you will not for that reason decline and that the nature of your engagements will enable you to respond favorably to the invitation. We hardly need assure you that you will be heartily greeted by the citizens of Buffalo, and that your lecture will be very largely attended." The conclusion is also signed by four others, including New York Congressman Albert H. Tracy and Nathan K. Hall, Fillmore's one-time law partner and future Postmaster General. In very good condition, with overall creasing and soiling, edge tears and chips, and some old tape to the back of the upper left corner.
Henry Alexander Wise (1806-1876) was a lawyer, diplomat, and politician who served the state of Virginia as both a congressman and as its governor. The father of Richard Alsop Wise and John Sergeant Wise, both of whom served as U.S. Representatives, Wise was a general in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War.
