Description

British explorer (1908-1999) best known as the leader of the 1957 Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition, the first expedition to cross Antarctica. Five items signed by the famed Antarctic explorer: an ALS, one page, July 4, 1990, in part: "Herewith a rather poor passport photograph…your Liberian first day cover…I do not feel able to sign as it is one of the few African territories which I have never visited. Perhaps you will accept instead the cover bearing the four Falkland Islands Dependencies stamps which were over printed with the name of my Trans-Antarctic Expedition"; the Falkland Islands cover and small glossy 1.75 x 2.5 passport photo mentioned in the letter, both signed in ink; an ALS, one page, January 10, 1994, in part: "I have signed and return the cover commemorating the 10th anniversary of the Antarctic Treaty. As I have no direct connection with Norway it seems inappropriate to sign the envelope regarding Norwegian immigration to America. As I am leaving for Antarctica in four days there is not time for you to send 'The Crossing of Antarctica' for signature"; and the FDC mentioned in the letter, honoring the 10th anniversary of the Antarctic Treaty, signed in black felt tip. In overall fine condition.
