Mailing envelope addressed in the hand of William Ewart Gladstone, 5 x 3.25, signed in the lower left, “W. Gladstone,” and addressed to “Rev. J. F. Mackarness, C. Heywood, Cheesden, Manchester.” In very good to fine condition, with creasing and light soiling. Accompanied by an engraving bearing a preprinted signature. John Fielder Mackarness (1820-1889) was a Church of England bishop. By the recommendation of Gladstone, he was appointed to the see of Oxford, being consecrated bishop on January 25, 1870, and invested as Chancellor of the Order of the Garter on February 5, 1870.
