TLS signed “E. V. Rickenbacker,” two pages, 8.5 x 10.75, Eastern Air Lines letterhead, June 9, 1937. Letter to Philip G. Rust, in part: "I know you appreciate the fact that we are in business to serve as many of the traveling public as is humanly possible and to the best of our ability. However, since putting on the DC-3 planes on trips 11 and 12, we were forced to keep these ships out of the cities you mention for several reasons." Rickenbacker lists the reasons as airport safety, the "element of time," and costs for airports to accommodate the DC-3 ships, explaining that in order "to bring a DC-3 plane down from seven to eight thousand feet, land, and return it to the same altitude costs approximately $50. for gasoline, oil, fixed charges, and the time of the flying crew, to say nothing of the wear and tear on a big ship of this kind that goes with every landing. Further as you know we are all fighting for our very existence in order to keep apace with the progress of art, and under the circumstances we are limited in what we can and cannot do economically." In fine condition, with a rusty paperclip impression to the upper left corner.
