Aviation pioneer (1888-1989) who invented of the biplane used in WWI called the Sopwith Camel. TLS signed “Yours sincerely, Thomas Sopwith,” one page, 5.5 x 8, Compton Manor letterhead, December 15, 1977. In part: "I wonder if you could help me in confirming a quick start competition during the Boston Aviation meeting (at Squantham) in the fall of 1911. We got to 9 seconds from a dead engine start. The runner up was a naval officer (Lt. (U.S.N) de Witt Milling) and we both flew Wright biplanes. I think the figures were published by the Boston Globe. It is a record which could not be approached today." In fine condition.
