Description

Artist proof of a John Fischetti political cartoon that hung in the personal chambers of Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas. The proof, which measures 17.5 x 11.75, depicts Douglas descending the front steps of the United States Supreme Court building, with adjacent box reading: “Justice Douglas Steps Down.” A preprinted signature and inscription above reads: “For Justice Douglas with love and thanks from an appreciative countryman—John Fischetti, 1975.” Preprinted annotations below indicate that the cartoon was intended “For Friday Chicago Daily News,” with date, “Nov 13, ‘75.” Framed to a slightly larger size, with the frame backing stamped "Justice Douglas." In fine condition. Accompanied by a letter from Phil Wikelund of The Great Northwest Bookstore, who states that he “received this Fischetti cartoon of William O. Douglas from his son’s estate. It had hung in his chambers in the Supreme Court until his death.”
