Description

"Issued 1861 at commencement of North & South War"

Interesting page featuring a "View of Washington City" and "Military Map of Maryland & Virginia" by Charles Magnus, 8.25 x 10.5, with annotations indicating the bridge into Virginia, the White House, and where a New York regiment camped at the outset of the Civil War. An ink note on the reverse reads: "This map given to me by Mr. Albert Hastings. Issued 1861 at commencement of North & South War. He served in the 24th New York Regiment. His reason for giving it to me was that the picture of the State House or Capitol at Washington D.C. is a good one and he thought might be of interest to my friends. The building was designed by a French architect, and the picture shows the proper front, but which has now become the back, as the city spread out in the opposite direction, from the original idea. The places were marked by Mr. H. to show where his Regiment lay before marching into Virginia." Also includes a Magnus patriotic cover of Washington (No. 3A). In fine condition, with light overall creasing.
