Description

Russian biologist and zoologist (1845-1916) best known for his pioneering research into the immune system for which he was awarded the 1908 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. ALS in French, signed “Elie Metchnikoff,” one page, 4.25 x 6.75, Institut Pasteur letterhead, May 16, 1906. Letter replying to an invitation from a colleague, in part (translated): "Thank you very much for your kind invitation, which I accept with the greatest of enthusiasm. I am only confused, being so unworthy of the honor you do me and this all the more so as I am not able to speak your language." In fine condition, with a stain touching the signature.
