"It is difficult to make a living by scientific writing until you have a certain reputation"

Eminent British evolutionary biologist (1887-1975) and brother of writer Aldous Huxley. ALS signed “J. S. Huxley,” one page both sides, 4.75 x 7.5, King's College letterhead, March 28, 1929. Letter to "Lapage," in part: "If you have any articles which you think the Realist c'd use, by all means send them to the Editor—say I told you to, if you like—but I don't say that'll get them accepted!…It is difficult to make a living by scientific writing until you have a certain reputation—as in all things else! I was lucky enough to acquire a certain notoriety (!) over the Daily Mail's stupid stunt about my Axltols, & have ever since been trying to live it down scientifically." In fine condition. In 1920, Huxley found that he could cause axolotls to metamorphose by feeding them bits of sheep thyroid. The Daily Mail declared that Huxley had discovered ‘The Elixir of Life.’
