Description

Three days before entering the White House, Ike weighs in on a proposed gift of Russian scriptures to America's Cold War enemy

TLS, one page, 7 x 10.25, personal letterhead, January 17, 1953. Letter to Dr. Gilbert Darlington of the American Bible Society, written three days before his inauguration as president. In full: "Thank you for your thoughtful letter of January 14th informing me that the American Bible Society has large quantities of Russian scriptures on hand ready to ship to Russia as a free gift. The interesting portfolio which you also submitted outlines graphically the situation in Russia, and describes in interesting detail the scriptures which your organization has available for distribution. As you so well know, there are many difficulties involved in attempting to make such a gift. I am forwarding your letter, together with the portfolio to the Secretary of State-designate, John Foster Dulles, in order that he may be familiar with the gift which the American Bible Society is prepared to make." In fine condition, with staple holes to the upper left corner, and small stains to the bottom edge.
