King of Spain (born 1527) from 1556 until his death in 1598; Sovereign of the Spanish Empire over North and South America, King of Portugal, Naples, Spanish Holland and Sicily, and King of England and Ireland while married to Queen Mary I. His eventful reign included Spain's conquest of the Philippines, the establishment of a colony in Florida, and the historic defeat of the Spanish Armada by the British in 1588. Manuscript DS in Spanish, signed “Yo El Rey,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 8.25 x 12, January 6, 1589. Untranslated. Signed prominently at the conclusion of the first page by King Philip II of Spain, and countersigned by Francisco Gonzalez de Heredia, secretary of the Royal Council and from 1588, secretary of Military Orders. Multiple other signatures appear on the second and third pages, in addition to a beautiful Christian symbol at the end of the document. In fine condition.
