French painter and printmaker (1868-1940) associated with the Les Nabis post-impressionist avant-garde artists. ALS in French, signed “E. Vuillard,” one page, 4.5 x 5.5, no date. An untranslated letter to Polish pianist Misia Sert, who at the time of this letter was married to Alfred Edwards. In fine condition, with a small piece of tape to the middle of the left edge. One of the most extraordinary and colorful women in France at the turn of the 20th century, Sert served as a muse, inspiration, and patron of the arts to many of the most prominent writers, painters, and musicians. It was said that the Vuillard was especially infatuated with her, and his numerous paintings of her are a testimony to that very fact. In particular, his 1899 oil painting The Nape of Misia’s Neck is considered one of the most erotic paintings in the world. Vuillard’s love for Sert, however, would remain unrequited, unspoken even, for many years to come.
