Description

French cardinal and statesman (1585-1642) who served as chief minister from 1624 until his death, widely considered the world's first prime minister. Manuscript DS in French, signed “Armand Card. de Richelieu,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 8.5 x 13.75, May 28, 1627. Before a notary at his palace on the Rue St. Honore in the parish of St. Eustache, Richelieu confirms a power of attorney to Lord Colnert, Overseer of the Royal Forts and Castle at Ollnoy and Broue. Lord Colnert will have authority to collect money due for rents, duties, and other financial obligations in the town and regions of Brouages, a port city in the southwest of France. The document enumerates these sources of income in specific detail and gives instructions as to the disposal of these monies. In fine condition, with some paper loss to the bottom of the hinge, and along the right edge of the second page.
