English theologian, philosopher, and scientist who is credited with the discovery of oxygen (1733-1804)Rare ALS, one page, 8 x 11, February 26, 1783. Letter written from Birmingham, recommending the noted Unitarian minister William Hazlitt. In full: "Mr. Hazzlit laying much more stress on my testimonial in his favour than it deserves, I cannot help certifying, that, tho I have not had much personal intercourse with him, he has been my correspondent many years; that I have every reason to consider him as a rational Christian, and a zealous friend of truth, and of civil and religious liberty. He was uniformly attached to the cause of America in the late contest. I have never heard of any reflection on his conduct as a man, or as a Christian minister; and wherever divine providence may conduct him, he has my earnest wishes and prayers in his favour." In very good condition, with light staining and soiling, and old repairs to fold splits on the reverse.
