TLS signed “A. Einstein,” one page, 8.5 x 10.5, blindstamped Princeton letterhead letterhead, April 23, 1945. Letter to artist and photographer Robert Haas in New York City, in full (translated): "Many thanks for the well done pictures. I have marked on the back side those which, in my opinion, are the best, and I would appreciate it if you would send me some of these." In very good to fine condition, with multiple intersecting folds.
An Austrian-born photographer, graphic designer, printer of handmade books, and typographer, Robert Haas was forced into exile by the Nazis in 1938, and he emigrated to New York City. There he embraced the cultural scene, engaging both in street photography and studio portraiture. Among his subjects were Arturo Toscanini, Oskar Kokoschka, and Albert Einstein—all fellow immigrants of note. The Wien Museum hosted an exhibition, 'Robert Haas: Framing Two Worlds,' in 2017. An interesting letter from Einstein to an artist who, like himself, was compelled to flee Europe by the specter of World War II.
