Description

Official color glossy 9.25 x 7.5 photo of the First Family at the White House, affixed to its original 12 x 11.5 mount, signed and inscribed on the mount in ink, "To Ambassador and Mrs. Franklin H. Williams, With all our good wishes, Lady Bird Johnson" and "Lyndon B. Johnson.” Framed to an overall size of 13.75 x 13. In fine condition.

A lawyer and civil rights leader, Williams first gained prominence as an assistant to Thurgood Marshall, representing the NAACP before courts in criminal cases throughout the South. He was instrumental in the foundation of the Peace Corps and became the organization's regional director for Africa. In 1963, President Johnson selected Williams to serve as US representative to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations; he became the first African American to fill the role. Two years later, President Johnson named him US ambassador to Ghana. During his three-year tenure at this post, he was credited with improving the formerly strained relations between the United States and the African nation.
