LS, one page, 8 x 10, May 22, 1846. Letter to Grinnell, Minturn & Co. of New York, in full, "Gentlemen, your note of the 20th inst. has been received, and I have to state in reply, that no occasion exists at present of a nature to warrant the Department in incurring the expense incident to the employment of a paid Bearer of Dispatches to Canton." In very good condition, with multiple vertical folds, and irregular light overall toning. Grinnell, Minturn & Co. was one of the leading transatlantic shipping companies in the middle 19th century. It is probably best known today as being the owner and operator of the Flying Cloud, arguably the greatest of the clipper ships.
