Description

Audio cassettes of Dylan's unpublished 1971 interview with Tony Glover—over three hours of candid talk between old friends

Tony Glover's archive of notes and original cassette tape recordings from his 1971 interview with Bob Dylan. The interview, conducted in three sessions in March 1971, spans four cassette tapes and has a combined duration of about 3.5 hours. Each case is labeled in black felt tip by Tony Glover, with dates of "3/18/71," "3/22/71," and "3/24/71." Glover's notes consist of a typed summary headed "Points Relevant to the Interview," with brief biographical facts about Dylan; lists of questions sent by Esquire, with a note from John Lombardi encouraging Glover to "try to get him to talk a little longer—nothing sensational, just human"; several pages of Glover's handwritten notes, with organizational thoughts jotted down related to Dylan's biography, career, and transition from folk to rock; a three-page handwritten list by Glover of Dylan's discography up to that point, naming albums and song titles; and a two-page handwritten chronology by Glover documenting the decade of Dylan's life from 1961 to 1971.

These significant notes were in Glover's hands as he interviewed Dylan, and provided the roadmap for their conversation: they touch upon his early life in Hibbing, his name change, Jewish prejudice, movies, musical influences, Woody Guthrie, New York City, protest songs, America's 'melting pot,' the media, the moon landings, the Frazier/Ali fight, fame versus freedom, criticism, Johnny Cash, drugs, going electric at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, songs like 'Subterranean Homesick Blues' and 'Like a Rolling Stone,' his motorcycle accident, media coverage, his poetry collection Tarantula, bootlegs, characters in songs, the youth culture, and many other subjects. In overall very good to fine condition.
