Description

TLS, one page, 8 x 10.5, War Department letterhead, April 2, 1935. Letter to Colonel Tenney Ross, in part: "Upon the occasion of your retirement from active service on account of physical disability, I desire to express to you the appreciation of the War Department, as well as my own, of the faithful and efficient service you rendered the country as an officer in the United States Army…Entering the service in 1898 as a second lieutenant of Infantry you steadily advanced through the grades to the rank of colonel, while executing many difficult tasks on various assignments of importance, with marked ability and good judgment…You were awarded a Silver Star Citation by the War Department for gallantry in action against certain Chippewa Indians at Sugar Point, Leech Lake, Minnesota, October 5, 1898. In recognition of your services during the World War you were awarded the French Croix de Guerre with Silver Star, and a Purple Heart by the War Department for excellent service as Chief of Staff of the 79th Division, with Oak-leaf cluster on account of wound received in action November 5-6, 1918, while serving as colonel, general staff. As you now pass from the active to the retired list I earnestly hope that the future will bring you good health and abundant happiness." In fine condition, with some light creasing in the lower blank area.
