American statesman (1814-1886) who served as Governor of New York and who was the unsuccessful Democratic presidential candidate in the infamous disputed election of 1876. Partly-printed DS, one page, 8 x 11.25, August 25, 1875. As governor of New York, Tilden appoints Oscar F. Thompason as "a Notary Public in and for the County of Washington." Signed at the conclusion by Governor Tilden and countersigned by Secretary of State Diedrich Willers, Jr. The gold seal and purple ribbon remain intact. In very good condition, with trimmed edges and somewhat irregular tonong.
