Rare ALS as president signed “Your friend, Jimmy Carter,” one page, 6.75 x 8.75, White House letterhead, May 12, 1977. Letter to Congressman Peter W. Rodino, in full: "I think often of the great contribution you made to the presentation of our system of government during the recent trying times for our republic. Your competence and integrity are an inspiration to all of us who love America. As President, I want to thank you." In fine condition.
Rodino rose to prominence as the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, where he oversaw the impeachment process against Richard Nixon that eventually led to the president's resignation. Rodino emerged as a possible running mate for Jimmy Carter in 1976, but withdrew from consideration due to his age and a recurring case of glaucoma. Instead, he was asked to give Carter's nominating speech at the DNC: 'With honest talk and plain truth, Jimmy Carter has appealed to the American people. His heart is honest, and the people will believe him. His purpose is right, and the people will follow him,' Rodino said. 'As he has brought a united South back into the Democratic Party, he will bring a united Democratic Party back into the leadership of America and a united America back to a position of respect and esteem in the eyes of the world.' Carter is exceedingly rare in autograph letters signed as president.
