Exemplary manuscript DS as president, signed “G:o Washington,” one page, 11.5 x 10.75, September 26, 1789. President Washington appoints Pierpoint Edwards as "Attorney of the said United States in and for the Connecticut District…Given under my hand at the City of New York." Beautifully signed at the conclusion in bold ink by President Washington. The crisp embossed paper seal affixed to the upper left remains full intact. Handsomely mounted, matted, and framed with a portrait and plaque to an overall size of 29.5 x 41. In fine condition.
This exceedingly rare, incredibly well-preserved document dates to just five months after George Washington took office as president of the United States, when New York City was still the nation's capital (as was the case from 1785-1790). Any documents signed by President Washington at New York are supremely scarce and much sought after. Pierpont Edwards had served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, served in the Continental Congress, and was a member of the Connecticut convention to ratify the United States Constitution in 1788. Under Thomas Jefferson, Edwards would be appointed to a seat on the United States District Court for the District of Connecticut. As an ultra-clean, boldly signed appointment from early in the presidency of George Washington, this is a truly remarkable document.
