Description

Leading English portrait painter (1769-1830) who served as the fourth president of the Royal Academy. ALS signed “Tho's Lawrence,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, June 14, [no year]. Letter to T. Tritton, Esq. postponing a portrait sitting because a sitting for Lord Liverpool has taken precedence. In part: "I am sorry to be oblig’d to postpone the pleasure of receiving you to Sat. next at Three O’clock. Lord Liverpool, the importance of whose engagements I need not mention, has fixed an appointment with me for Thursday, and as this leads me from home, I am compelled to yield my present arrangements for that day, amongst which was a sitting from the Duchess of Northumberland, as well as from yourself. Unless I hear from you to the contrary, I shall be prepared to receive you at Three on Saturday." In very good to fine condition, with light creasing and toning, and a small stain to the edge of the first page. Lord Liverpool was British Prime Minister from 1812-27; he sat for Lawrence multiple times during his life. Given the preeminence Lawrence is according this sitting, it likely dates to Liverpool's time as prime minister. Lawrence also did portraits of Charlotte F. Percy, Duchess of Northumberland, and of George Tritton.
