Letter to Elmer 'Bud' Hale, a World War II veteran who served as chairman of the board of The National Bank of McAlester, in part: "I certainly wish I could be with you for the celebration for Carl Albert. He is one of the finest men I ever knew. I have let myself get involved in a lot of commitments and there isn't a chance in the world of my being there on the date you named. I regret it more than I can tell you." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope bearing a pre-printed free frank, and a Western Union telegram to Hale from Charles L. Ward, in part: "Sorry but White House advised today president can't possibly make it to McAlester on May 14 much as he would like to."
