Description

Invitation for Alexander McQueen's fashion show, ‘The Dance of the Twisted Bull,’ presented at Stade Francais in Paris on October 6, 2001, as part of the designer’s Spring/Summer 2002 collection. The invitation consists of a perforated cover with a red-tinted image of a bull pierced with matador swords, which, when unfolded, measures 15.75″ x 10.25″ and features white text to interior listing event, venue, and contact information, with the invitation issued to “Alice Smith” for seat “FK6.” The invitation also contains a credit sheet for “El baile del toro retorsido.” In very good to fine condition, with a horizontal fold, light creasing, and a small tear to top of cover.

The first of McQueen’s collections since partnering with the Gucci Group, ‘The Dance of the Twisted Bull’ concentrated on the rich aesthetic of Spanish culture, with particular emphasis placed on the flamenco dancer and the matador, architectural cut-outs that recalled the work of Antoni Gaudí, and through colors redolent of the Mediterranean and the dark Romanticism of painter Francisco de Goya.

Provenance: from the Alexander McQueen Collection of Alice Smith, his first publicist, longtime friend, and muse.
